From 2002 to 2011, Enda Kenny served as the Leader of the Opposition in Ireland. He was the leader of Fine Gael, the largest opposition party in the Irish Dáil, or parliament. Kenny was a strong critic of the Fianna Fáil government, which had been in power since 1997. He led Fine Gael to victory in the 2011 general election, and became Taoiseach, or prime minister, of Ireland.
