Fabian Gottlieb von Bellingshausen was born on 20 September 1778. He was a Baltic German naval officer who is best known for leading two expeditions to Antarctica in 1819-1821 and 1821-1823. On his first expedition, he became the first European to sight Antarctica, and on his second expedition he led the first circumnavigation of the continent.
