Answer
Francesco Redi was an Italian physician and naturalist. He is best known for his experiments in the 17th century which disproved Theory of spontaneous generation, which was the prevailing belief at the time. Redi's experiments showed that maggots did not appear spontaneously on rotting meat, but rather hatched from eggs laid by flies. This discovery helped to lay the foundation for the modern science of microbiology.
