The 2010 J. J. Sakurai Prize for Theoretical Particle Physics was awarded to Gerry Guralnik, C. R. Hagen, Tom Kibble, Peter Higgs and Robert Brout for their work on developing Theory of spontaneous symmetry breaking in quantum field theory. This theory explains how the Higgs boson, which was discovered in 2012, gives mass to other particles.
