Fulbert Youlou (1917-1972) was the first President of Congo-Brazzaville from 1960 to 1963. He was a member of the Brazzaville Group, a pro-independence political movement in French Equatorial Africa. After independence, Youlou was elected President and his party, the Democratic Party of Congo, won the legislative elections. Youlou's presidency was marked by corruption and economic mismanagement.
