G. H. Hardy was English. He was born in Cranleigh, Surrey, England, in 1867. He studied mathematics at Trinity College, Cambridge, and was elected a fellow of the college in 1896. He remained at Cambridge for the rest of his career, and was a professor of mathematics from 1906 to 1931. Hardy was a prolific mathematician, and made important contributions to number theory, analysis, and probability theory.
