Gheorghiu-Dej was the First Secretary of the Romanian Communist Party from 1945 to 1965. He was a close ally of Soviet leader Joseph Stalin and oversaw the Sovietization of Romania. Gheorghiu-Dej was a staunch Stalinist and opposed the de-Stalinization reforms that were taking place in the Soviet Union under Nikita Khrushchev. He died in 1965 and was succeeded as First Secretary by Nicolae Ceaușescu.
