Gheorghiu-Dej died on 19 March 1965. He was a Romanian communist politician who served as the General Secretary of the Romanian Communist Party from 1945 to 1965. He was a staunch Stalinist and a supporter of the Soviet Union. After the death of Joseph Stalin, Gheorghiu-Dej began to distance himself from the Soviet Union and pursued a more independent foreign policy.
