On 15 July 1943, Field Marshal Günther von Kluge was severely injured in a car accident, suffering a fractured skull and internal injuries. As a result, he was evacuated from the Eastern Front to a military hospital in Germany, where he remained for several months. Kluge never fully recovered from his injuries and was eventually replaced by Field Marshal Walter Model as commander of Army Group Centre.
