Crown Prince Gustaf VI Adolf was the heir to the throne of Sweden, and was the second son of King Gustav V and Queen Victoria. He became King in 1950 upon the death of his father, and reigned until his death in 1973. During his reign, Sweden underwent a period of great social and economic change, and he was known as a progressive and enlightened monarch.
