King Gyanendra was in power during most of the Nepalese Civil War. He became king in 2001, following the assassination of his brother, King Birendra. Gyanendra's rule was marked by political instability and conflict, as the Maoists fought against the government. In 2006, the Maoists and the government signed a peace agreement, and Gyanendra agreed to step down as king. The monarchy was abolished in 2008.
