During the Cultural Revolution, Hua Guofeng was an administrator in Hunan province. He was responsible for implementing the policies of Mao Zedong and suppressing dissent. In 1976, after Mao's death, Hua became the leader of China and continued to implement Mao's policies. However, he was eventually overthrown by Deng Xiaoping in 1981.
