How did Ilan Ramon's spacecraft, the Columbia, meet its end?

  • Hit by asteroid

  • Lost in space

  • Disintegrated during re-entry

  • Landed safely but failed subsequently

Answer

The Space Shuttle Columbia disintegrated during re-entry on February 1, 2003, killing all seven crew members. The cause of the disaster was a piece of foam insulation that broke off during launch and damaged Thermal protection system of the left wing. The damage caused the wing to overheat and break apart during re-entry, which led to the disintegration of the spacecraft.
