Ilan Ramon was an Israeli fighter pilot who became an astronaut. He was the first Israeli in space, and the first astronaut to die in a space disaster. Ramon was born in Ramat Gan, Israel, in 1954. He joined the Israeli Air Force in 1973, and became a fighter pilot. He flew combat missions during the 1982 Lebanon War and the 1991 Gulf War.
