Israeli astronaut Ilan Ramon was a payload specialist on the Space Shuttle Columbia's STS-107 mission, which tragically ended with the spacecraft's breakup and the deaths of all seven crew members upon re-entering Earth's atmosphere. Ramon, who was the first Israeli to go to space, was a decorated fighter pilot and aeronautical engineer. He was also a member of the Israeli Air Force's elite "Flying Tigers" squadron.
