Ilan Ramon was born on June 20, 1954 in Ramat Gan, Israel. He was an Israeli Air Force fighter pilot and later aeronautical engineer who became the first Israeli astronaut. He flew on the Space Shuttle Columbia on STS-107, the final flight of the Space Shuttle program, which disintegrated during re-entry on February 1, 2003. Ramon was one of the seven astronauts who died in the accident.
