Ilan Ramon was a member of the Israel Air Force, and served as a fighter pilot. He flew 53 combat missions during the 1982 Lebanon War and the 1987 First Intifada. He was also a test pilot and flight instructor. In 1998, Ramon was selected as the first Israeli astronaut to fly in space.
