Ilan Ramon was the first Israeli astronaut to travel into space. He was selected to be part of the Columbia Space Shuttle mission in 2003. The mission was a success, but Ramon and the other astronauts on board died when the shuttle disintegrated during re-entry into the Earth's atmosphere. Ramon is remembered as a hero in Israel and around the world for his pioneering work in space exploration.
