Ivan Bagramyan was a Soviet military commander, who is known for his role in World War II and the Soviet–Afghan War. Bagramyan was born in Tbilisi, Georgia, in 1897, and he joined the Russian Imperial Army in 1915. After the Russian Revolution, Bagramyan joined the Red Army, and he fought in the Russian Civil War.
