Lij Iyasu was designated Emperor of Ethiopia in 1889 when he was 20 years old. He was the son of Emperor Yohannes IV, who had been killed in battle against the Mahdists in March of that year. Iyasu was a controversial figure who was accused of being sympathetic to the Mahdists and of plotting to convert Ethiopia to Islam. He was deposed in 1916 and died in exile in 1935.
