Zewditu I succeeded Lij Iyasu as Emperor of Ethiopia in 1916. She was the only woman to ever hold the title of Emperor of Ethiopia, and her reign was marked by political instability and civil unrest. She was deposed by her cousin, Tafari Makonnen, in 1930, who then assumed the title of Emperor Haile Selassie I.
