James Van Allen was born in Mount Pleasant, Iowa on September 7, 1914. He was an American physicist and space scientist who is best known for his discovery of the Van Allen radiation belts, which are two doughnut-shaped regions of charged particles that surround Earth's magnetosphere. Van Allen also played a key role in the development of the first artificial satellite, Explorer 1, which was launched in 1958.
