After his return to Ireland, James Larkin formed the Workers' Union of Ireland in 1923. This was a union for unskilled workers and was meant to compete with the Irish Transport and General Workers' Union, which Larkin had lost control of. The Workers' Union of Ireland had a difficult time competing with the ITGWU and did not last long.
