Jenny Shipley stopped being the leader of the opposition in 2001. This was after she lost the election to Helen Clark. Shipley had been the leader of the National Party since 1996, and had been prime minister from 1997 to 1999. After she lost the election, she remained in Parliament as a backbencher until she retired in 2004.
