Jozef Tiso grew up in Bytča, a town in what is now Slovakia. He was born in 1887 and was the son of a farmer. He attended the local gymnasium and then studied law at the University of Vienna. After graduating, he worked as a lawyer in Bytča. In 1918, he became involved in politics and was elected to the Czechoslovak parliament.
