Khaleda Zia (born 1945) was the first female Prime Minister of Bangladesh. She was born in Pakistan to a wealthy family and was educated in the United States. She married Ziaur Rahman, a military officer who became the President of Bangladesh in 1975. After his assassination in 1981, Zia became the leader of the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) and was elected Prime Minister in 1991.
