Louis XVIII's original title was Count of Provence. He was the younger brother of Louis XVI, the last king of France before the French Revolution. When Louis XVI was executed in 1793, Louis XVIII became the heir apparent to the French throne. However, he was forced to flee France during the Revolution and spent most of the next 20 years in exile.
