Carlota Joaquina, the daughter of King Charles IV of Spain, was the wife of Portuguese prince Pedro and later became regent of Portugal and Brazil. In 1816, Belgrano unsuccessfully promoted her as a regent ruler for the Viceroyalty of the Río de la Plata, a Spanish colony that included what is now Argentina, Paraguay, Uruguay and parts of Bolivia, Chile and Brazil.
