Muriel Bowser succeeded Adrian Fenty on the council in a special election in 2007. Fenty was elected mayor of Washington, D.C., in 2006, and Bowser was appointed to fill his seat on the council. She won a special election in 2007 to retain the seat. Bowser has been a member of the council since then, and she was elected mayor in 2014.
