Jerzy Charpak, known as Georges Charpak after becoming a French citizen, was a Polish-born physicist who won the Nobel Prize in Physics in 1992 for his invention and development of particle detectors, particularly the multiwire proportional chamber. Born in Dabrowa Gornicza, Poland, he changed his name to Georges upon moving to France in 1946.
