Peace Democrats, also known as Copperheads, were a faction of the Democratic Party opposed to the American Civil War. They generally opposed the policies of President Abraham Lincoln and the Republican Party. Peace Democrats believed that the war was a mistake and that the Union should be restored through negotiations with the Confederate States of America.
