In addition to his expertise in Physics, Van Vleck was also a mathematician. He received his Ph.D. in Mathematics from Harvard University in 1927, and went on to publish numerous papers on mathematical physics. His work in this area was highly influential, and he is considered to be one of the pioneers of quantum mechanics.
