Decaen, the French governor of Mauritius, arrested Flinders in 1803 during his expedition to map the Australian coastline. Flinders' ship, the Investigator, had been damaged and he was forced to seek repairs at Mauritius, a French colony. Decaen suspected Flinders of spying and detained him for six years, during which time Flinders continued his work on his charts and maps.
