Maximian committed suicide by hanging himself in 310 AD. He had been defeated by Constantine at the Battle of the Milvian Bridge, and knew that he would be executed if captured. Maximian's suicide was a sign of the changing times, as it marked the end of the era of the Tetrarchy, and the beginning of Constantine's rule as sole emperor of Rome.
