From 1981 to 1982 and from 1990 to 1991, Michael D. Higgins served as Mayor of Galway. He was the first Labour Party mayor of the city, and his time in office was marked by a number of significant achievements, including the establishment of the Galway City Museum and the development of the city's riverfront area.
