Mikhail Frunze rose to prominence during the 1905 Russian Revolution. He joined the Bolshevik Party in 1903 and was active in the revolutionary movement. He was arrested and exiled to Siberia in 1907, but escaped and returned to Russia in 1910. He was again arrested and exiled to Siberia in 1913, but escaped again in 1914.
