Mikis Theodorakis was imprisoned during the 1967–1974 Greek junta, a military dictatorship which ruled Greece from 1967 to 1974. The junta was established by a group of army officers who overthrew the democratically elected government of Georgios Papandreou. The junta ruled Greece with an iron fist, suppressing all dissent and arresting and torturing anyone who opposed it.
