After Murad V was deposed, his uncle, Abdul Hamid II, became Sultan of the Ottoman Empire. Abdul Hamid II ruled for 33 years, from 1876 to 1909. He was a conservative ruler who tried to return the Ottoman Empire to its former glory. He also tried to suppress nationalist movements within the empire.
