In what year did Ngô Đình Diệm proclaim the creation of the Republic of Vietnam?

  • 1963

  • 1957

  • 1959

  • 1955

Answer

Ngô Đình Diệm proclaimed the creation of the Republic of Vietnam in 1955. He had been appointed Prime Minister of South Vietnam by the United States in 1954, and he was seen as a strong anti-communist who could help to prevent the spread of communism in South Vietnam. Diệm's government was authoritarian and corrupt, but he was able to maintain control of South Vietnam until his assassination in 1963.
