Paavo Nurmi lost the 5,000 m at the 1928 Summer Olympics. He had won the event at the previous two Olympics, but was unable to defend his title in Amsterdam. Nurmi was in the lead for most of the race, but he was overtaken by Dutch runner Kees Van Dijk in the final lap. Van Dijk won the gold medal, while Nurmi took the silver.
