Christian Lauterbur was an American chemist and physicist who won the Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine in 2003 for his discovery of magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). Lauterbur was born in Sidney, Ohio, on May 27, 1929. He earned a bachelor's degree in chemistry from the University of Cincinnati in 1951 and a doctorate in physical chemistry from the University of Pennsylvania in 1957.
