Peter Medawar was born in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, on 28 February 1915. He was the son of a British diplomat, Sir Alexander Medawar, and his wife, Alice. Medawar's family moved to England when he was a child, and he was educated at Eton College and Oxford University. He went on to become a leading immunologist, and won the Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine in 1960.
