Otto of Brunswick succeeded Philip as King of Germany. Otto was a member of the House of Welf and was the son of Henry the Lion, Duke of Saxony and Bavaria. He was elected King of Germany in 1198 after Philip's death. Otto's reign was marked by conflict with the Holy Roman Emperor Henry VI.
