After the death of Ignatius, Emperor Basil I reinstated Photios I as the Patriarch of Constantinople. This was done in order to maintain the peace between the Eastern and Western Roman Empires. Photios I had been deposed by Emperor Michael III, who was then overthrown by Basil I.
