Leo I, known as Leo the Thracian, was the Eastern Roman Emperor from 457 to 474. He succeeded Pulcheria's husband Marcian, who died in January 457. Leo was the first emperor to be born outside of the Roman Empire, and his reign marked a period of stability and prosperity for the empire.
