After Trujillo was assassinated in 1961, his family was pressured into exile by the military junta that had taken over the country. The junta wanted to remove all traces of Trujillo's rule from the Dominican Republic, and they saw the Trujillo family as a symbol of that rule. The family was forced to leave the country and live in exile in Spain.
