Richard Trevithick was born on 13 April 1771. He was a Cornish engineer who is credited with building the first steam-powered locomotive to run on rails. Trevithick's steam locomotive, which he called the "Puffing Devil", was demonstrated at the Penydarren Ironworks in Merthyr Tydfil, Wales, on 21 February 1804.
