J.E.B. Stuart served in increasingly important cavalry commands in the Army of Northern Virginia. He was initially assigned to command a small cavalry unit of 18 men, but his actions in the First Battle of Manassas (Bull Run) led to his being given command of a regiment. He subsequently led a brigade of cavalry, and finally a division.
