Robert Guéï was the president of the Ivory Coast from 2000 to 2005. He was a career military officer who rose through the ranks to become the army chief of staff in 1999. In 2000, he led a coup d'état against the democratically elected president, Laurent Gbagbo. Guéï ruled the Ivory Coast as a military dictator until he was overthrown in another coup d'état in 2005.
