Answer
Laurent Gbagbo was elected president of the Ivory Coast in 2000 after the previous president, Robert Guéï, was overthrown in a coup. Gbagbo was a member of the Ivorian Popular Front (FPI), a socialist party that had been banned under Guéï's rule. Gbagbo's election was contested by the opposition party, the Rally of the Republicans (RDR), and led to a civil war that lasted from 2002 to 2007.
